BRS suspends K Kavitha over alleged anti-party activities

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Tuesday announced the suspension K. Kavitha, citing “recent behavior and ongoing anti-party activities” that, the party said, were harming its interests.

In a statement issued from Telangana Bhavan, Hyderabad, the party leadership said that BRS President K. Chandrasekhar Rao had taken the decision to suspend Kavitha “with immediate effect.”

The press release, signed by Chief Secretary T. Ravinder Rao on behalf of those responsible for party disciplinary matters, stated that the leadership is taking the matter seriously.

K. Kavitha, a prominent Telangana leader and daughter of K. Chandrasekhar Rao, has served as an MLC and has been actively involved in the party’s political campaigns.

The move comes against the backdrop of a long-standing rift between Kavitha and senior party leadership, particularly her brother and BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao (KTR).

Earlier this year, Kavitha alleged that efforts were made to merge the KCR-led outfit with the BJP, a proposal she claimed was brought to her while she was in prison in Delhi over the liquor policy money laundering case.

She had rejected the merger outright, saying the BRS “carries the spirit of Telangana” and should never be merged with a national party.

Kavitha’s remarks exposed internal tensions within the party. She had also criticised the silence of other leaders during her incarceration and public targeting on social media and in the press, questioning why no one came to her defense.

Kavitha accused some BRS leaders of undermining her political prospects, including her defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Nizamabad.

The suspension marks a rare public disciplinary action against a senior BRS leader and comes after months of escalating friction, including leaks of letters she wrote to KCR warning of conspiracies within the party and expressing disappointment over the party’s handling of judicial scrutiny of the Kaleshwaram project.
