BBC Ambulance viewers left sobbing just minutes into new episode

BBC viewers couldn't contain their emotions just minutes into the new series of Ambulance. The hit programme returned to screens with its 15th series on Tuesday (October 21) and introduced viewers to call handler Ellie, who was on her final shift before starting training as an ambulance support worker.

While she was speaking to the team about her upcoming role, Ellie quickly answered the phone to a man who explained his wife was about to give birth. "She's actually about to give birth. What should I do?" the caller asked, before revealing he could see the baby's head. Ellie guided the man through what he needed to do if his wife delivers the baby before the ambulance arrives. She said: "Now, if the baby delivers, support the baby's head and shoulders. The baby will be slippery so don't drop it, OK?"

When the caller said he could no longer see the baby's head, a member of Ellie's team urged the woman to push if she had contractions.

The caller could be heard supporting his wife as he said: "Chels, keep pushing."

Ellie explained that the ambulance was on its way with lights and sirens. "Chels, you're doing amazing. That's it," the caller said. Ellie told the man to encourage his wife to keep on pushing as she was heard screaming in the background.

The man confirmed the baby had been delivered, and reassured the ambulance staff that he was breathing and crying.

The team became emotional as the man said: "He's here, Chels. He's here."

As the ambulance arrived, the man thanked Ellie for her help throughout the situation.

The emotional scenes struck a chord with viewers, many of whom took to social media to share that they were moved to tears.

"5 minutes in and im blubbing," one wrote as a second confessed: "These episodes always makes me emotional."

Speaking about the programme, another penned: "My eyes have been sore all day but watching #ambulance has made me emotional."

"Such a lovely start to the new series," added a fourth.

Echoing this, another said: "This woman is giving birth on the phone and TV. Perfect way to start the new series."
