Underrated European city named top October travel spot with £2 pints

Travel experts have named a European city that is one of the best travel destinations for October, and it's a place you might not have ever heard of. Esteemed travel publication Time Out has named its top picks for places to visit around the world in October, from ancient cities in Asia to overlooked gems in Europe. One of those places is a city you might not have ever heard of in a country you may have never been to.

However, according to Time Out, it is one of the best places to visit in October. "October might just be the best month of the year to travel," the travel experts write. In the Northern Hemisphere, trees have taken on gorgeous shades of orange and red, while down south, spring is settling in nicely." The list features a mix of places from across the globe, all listed as great places to visit in October for various reasons.

They say Timisoara, Romania, is one of the best European destinations to visit in October. This city is home to a quarter of a million people and is situated in the western part of the country, close to the border of Serbia.

Timisoara is a city that many Brits haven't heard of, but Time Out has listed a number of reasons to go there in October. Firstly, they point out the "large public squares, leafy gardens and restored pastel-painted art nouveau architecture" as the top attractions for tourists.

Additionally, they describe it as "an attractive city break that's a far cry from the tower blocks other Romanian cities are known for". As well as its aesthecially-pleasing buildings, Timisoara is home to fascinating history.

In fact, it was Romania's first 'free city' and is the home of the country's 1989 revolution to overthrow the communist dictatorship. This fascinating history can be experienced with a visit to the Museum of the 1989 Revolution.

Time Out also lists the city's jazz bars, grand opera house and other live music venues as a big draw for visitors. On TripAdvisor, the top-rated tourist attraction in the Romanian city is Timisoara Orthodox Cathedral, which has been called a "must-visit" by tourists.

Other attractions that have proven popular with visitors are Unirii Square, Victory Square, Amazonia Aquapark, Timisoara Historical Centre and the Communist Consumers Museum.

On Time Out's list of the best places to visit across the globe in October 2025, Timisoara made the number nine spot. At number one is the country of Sri Lanka, which the publication said is at the start of its shoulder season in October, making it a great month to enjoy its beaches and scenery.

Turkey is second on the list, with temperatures in the 30s during October. In third place is New Mexico in the US, followed by Valencia in Spain, New York City, the Philippines, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Timisoara in Romania, and San Francisco.

In Timisoara, temperatures tend to be in the late teens in the month of October. Meanwhile, according to cost-of-living site Numbeo, the average price of a beer in the city is a little less than £2.
