Netflix viewers have started bingeing Mob War, a new docuseries that examines a violent struggle for power in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania during the 1990s.
The three-part Netflix series delves into the era of open mob warfare that shook Philadelphia and caught the attention of national media.
Two of the major figures the series follows are mafia don John Stanfa and Joey Merlino, who continues to deny he had any involvement in the violence, as well as being a member of the Philadelphia Mafia.
Gunmen loyal to Stanfa, who had seized control of the Philly mob after the downfall of the infamous Nicky Scarfo, injured Merlino and killed Michael Ciancaglini in an ambush.
After watching the documentary, viewers want to know more about the bloody power struggle and where Stanfa is now.
Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia examines the violent mob clashes that occurred on the streets of Philadelphia in the 1990s.
The synopsis reads: "Philadelphia is the City of Brotherly Love, but in the '90s, it was a bloodbath. Two warring mob factions battle for control in this true-crime series."
It begins with the power vacuum left by Scarfo's 1986 arrest, as Stanfa was handpicked by New York's Five Families to restore order.
However, a new group of young mobsters threatened his position, leading to a deadly rebellion that tore the city apart and gained the attention of the FBI.
Stanfa was indicted by a federal grand jury in 1994 and was arrested, with his federal trial lasting seven weeks.
In November 1995, he was convicted of multiple crimes alongside seven of his associates, including murder, extortion, obstruction of justice and illegal gambling.
Stanfa was found guilty of 33 of 35 charges against him and has been sentenced to life in prison.
The former mob boss, now 84, is serving his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution, Danbury in Connecticut, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons database.
