Former national security adviser John Bolton has been charged in a federal investigation over the possible mishandling of classified information, a source told the Associated Press. Bolton served for over a year in Donald Trump’s first administration before being fired in 2019.
The investigation became public in August when the FBI searched Bolton’s Maryland home and Washington office for classified records he may have kept from his time in government.
The news emerged as Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office. The president said he was unaware of the indictment and criticised Bolton, calling him a “bad person” and “a bad guy”.
Video “I think he’s a bad person,” Trump said. “He’s a bad guy.” He added, “That’s the way it goes, right?” he said.
Bolton is expected to surrender to federal authorities in Greenbelt as early as Friday, CNN reported.
