New York City has paid a historical tribute to the Sikh community by naming a street after Guru Tegh Bahadur , the 9th Sikh guru, to honour his legacy. NYC Council Member Lynn Schulman unveiled the street on October 14. The stretch of 114th St & 101st Avenue in Richmond Hill, which is also home to Gurudwara Makhan Shah Lubana , has been renamed Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji Marg Way.

"In a proud moment for the Sikh Sangat, a street in New York is now named after the epitome of religious freedom & protector of human rights, the 9th Sikh Guru Sahib, Hind Di Chadar, Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji," wrote Puri. He further went on to say, "This befitting honour highlights the significance of the Sikh community in Richmond Hill and recognises the contribution of Sikh heritage to the cultural fabric of New York City where I have lived during my posting as the Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations from 2009 to 2013."
